Chennai: In light of the increasing occurrence of wild animals suffering accidents in human habitations, the Chennai place of job of the Union ministry of surroundings, forests and climate alternate has decided to organise a coaching programme for veterinarians, particularly within the rural areas, on providing basic treatment to injured animals.
In the first session, which started on Monday, 10 veterinarians each from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and two from Andaman and Nicobar islands will learn from Madras Veterinary College professionals on handling injured flora and fauna, particularly snakes. During the five-day session, they will be taken to the snake park in Guindy and the Vandalur zoo to peer the typesof treatment provided, mentioned regional head and extra major chief conservator of forests M R G Reddy.
Most incidents of animals being injured occur near or inside of flora and fauna sanctuaries and in a majority of the cases, the injured animal invariably dies because of loss of right kind veterinary care, mentioned Reddy.
The role of veterinarians is an important in one of these scenario as a skilled skilled can tranquilise the animal and free up it in a nearby forest.
While the first batch of coaching can be conducted by the Union ministry, the states involved can be resposible for conducting at least 3 periods which might be required. The Tamil Nadu forest division is already getting ready for the second session. Each state must have at least 100 vets to avoid wasting injured flora and fauna and assist bring down the occurrence of man-animal conflicts, he mentioned.
The veterinarians will amongst other things learn about performing autopsies on animals, sampling in emergencies, rescue of flora and fauna during herbal/man-made disasters, wild animal behavioural interpretation and distress management, therapeutic management of critically injured flora and fauna and disease-related issues.
