NEW DELHI: India on Friday mentioned it's looking ahead to the US notification on hike in import tariff on metal and aluminium to gauze its impact on domestic gamers amid international outcry over the America's resolution to extend tasks beyond its dedication at the WTO.
US President Donald Trump has imposed heavy price lists on imported metal and aluminium, sparking fears of a world trade war.
Trump signed two proclamations that levied a 25 in step with cent tariff on metal and a 10 in step with cent tariff on aluminium imported from all international locations except Canada and Mexico. The contentious price lists will pass into impact in 15 days.
Talking to journalists here, Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia mentioned there's a "disquiet" as the US has raised tasks on positive pieces beyond the bound rates or its dedication at the World Trade Organisation.
When requested what can be impact of the US responsibility hike on India, the Secretary mentioned "of course" there can be some impact as India is an exporter.
"We will wait to see what from it (US notification on tariff hike) will take," she mentioned.
When requested if different international locations too have raised tasks beyond the bound price, Teaotia mentioned no different WTO member has used the "security exception" argument as done through the US in elevating tasks on import of metal and aluminium.
India, she mentioned is not a protectionist nation and has all the time saved its import tasks within the WTO bound rates.
She further mentioned that 17 international locations, together with India, had expressed worry over the US plans to lift price lists right through the General Council Meeting of the WTO at Geneva in Switzerland.
To every other query on US demand to lower import responsibility on super-bikes, like Harley Davidson, Teaotia mentioned India has its own 'Make In India' and is largest producer of motor motorcycles. She, however didn't elaborate further.
