Coimbatore: The Good Shepherd High School at Fort, Town Hall, is only a year wanting turning 100. The unhealthy news, in keeping with a section of former students and academics, is that the control is making plans to shut it down owing to deficient strength. The issue was discussed on Sunday as the students of the 1994 batch accumulated to felicitate their academics.
The school control, alternatively, denied the studies and said they had been having a look to support the college’s situation.
Set up in 1919 as an elementary school, it was upgraded to a middle school in 1927 and a high school in 1947. This government-aided school was as soon as the choice of many from Town Hall, Ukkadam and Sungam areas.
Recalling the nice old days, P Muthamilan, 62, a former Tamil trainer of the college, said the college had round 650 students at its peak. “Lots of SC/ST students and kids of sanitary employees who studied in the school have later made their mark in quite a lot of fields,” he said. “Though the move proportion was round 47% prior to i joined the college, after important Philomin Maria Joseph took over, it rose enormously due to his efforts. In 1993 and 1994, the college saw 100% effects,” Muthamilan added.
Former academics of the college said the control had stopped admission to Class VI four years in the past and made the students, who cleared Class V, sign up for a matriculation school close by, a sister fear of the control. “The control systematically closed admissions to Class VI and made the students sign up for the matriculation school. That’s why the coed strength has come down,” said a former trainer.
When contacted, Fr Andrew, correspondent of the college, said the control had now not decided to close down the college. “We have now not stopped admissions either. But oldsters don’t choose the college because it doesn’t have Class XI & XII,” he said. Pointing out that the college academics had been on analysis duty, he said, “Once they come again, we will talk about techniques to support the college.”
Former students said of their days the college was probably the most sought-after in the space. “There was hardly ever any vacant seat in the school,” said K Mahendran, 39, who finished Class X from the college in 1994. “Now, it is sad listen that the college is about to be closed down for want of scholar strength,” he said.
