Cauvery water tension reaches Chennai shores

Anticipating a stir a day after a flash protest by means of a couple of folks at Marina Beach over the Cauvery issue, the town police on Sunday turned the spot into a castle, with men in khaki barricading the stretch till afternoon. They made positive that Elliot’s Beach too used to be off limits.
While politicians took their protest to Valluvar Kottam, the sprawling sands wore a deserted look on Easter Sunday morning, an odd sight on any weekend. The shoreline remained quiet but there used to be a nearly palpable air of hysteria, reflecting the political temper ahead of a series of protests and shutdowns anticipated in town and across Tamil Nadu through the week.

The police cordon used to be set up since crack of dawn and morning walkers had been the first to return dissatisfied after being denied access into the seashore. Vehicle access into the provider lane alongside the Marina from Labour Statue till Light House used to be blocked. The long weekend used to be sure to draw visitors but plenty of them had been turned away. “I got here to the town from Thanjavur and had planned to spend time on the seashore on Sunday. I had no thought of the blockade, so we had to settle for a view of the Marina from the Light House,” stated Manimuthu, who had come down together with his circle of relatives of five.

After the jallikattu protest at Marina ultimate January, the police had been fast to barricade the seashore on the hint of a possible demonstration. But unlike up to now, there used to be a blanket of policemen on Sunday alongside the shore and on roads nearby.

At least 1,000 men, including CISF team of workers had been deployed at Marina and 100 in Besant Nagar, to prevent crowds from accumulating. Four makeshift watch towers and four all-terrain cars saved a strict vigil through the day. Many retail outlets remained closed and trade used to be gradual for hawkers at the seashores.

“I earn ?1,000 on Sundays. But these days’s gross sales have got me simply ?50,” stated Parameshwari, who sells ice cream at the seashore. Fish vendors stated they lost the brisk trade typical of Sunday. “Policemen stated we didn’t have to near our retail outlets. But there were very few customers. We closed so the fish would no longer go unhealthy within the heat,” stated Selvi, who runs the fish stall on Loop Road.

The police cordon used to be in position till the afternoon, after which the crowds began to swell and a couple of folks scaled the barricades. Policemen regarded on haplessly as they frisked other visitors and gave them access. After 5pm, the seashores had been packed and there used to be the standard Sunday revelry.

In the other part of town, protests by means of political events in Valluvar Kottam held up traffic for almost an hour, starting from 1pm. To sign in their disapproval of policemen detaining some party employees, a number of local leaders squatted at the street and taken cars to a halt. Motorists from Kodambakkam and Nungambakkam and heading toward Gemini Flyover and Anna Salai had been stuck at Valluvar Kottam junction.
