Expert rues decline in knowledge of tree species

Swamy, additionally a member of the Madras Naturalist Society, expressed displeasure over the failure of the authorities to take steps to give protection to timber within the city, said, “In Chennai, the town company has made stringent rules to give protection to timber. There are restrictions even to strike a nail to the bark or to place up commercials and hoardings, let alone felling a tree. That is not the case here, sadly.”


Mysuru, which has more than 60 parks can do a lot more relating to planting timber, said Swamy. “Mysuru has all the possibilities of earning the sobriquet, ‘City of Parks’. These parks can boast of more than a few tree and plant species however sadly, this is not taking place,” he said.


Alarmed through the ample presence of Senna Spectabilis at Kukkarahalli Lake, Swamy said, “It is not indigenous to India. It is a trojan horse just like the Lantana shrub found in Bandipur and Nagarahole forests, which is understood to have an hostile effect on ecological stability. Senna Specabilis is found almost all over, and its inhabitants has increased at the lake. This plant will become a tree, and spell the loss of life knell for different ones.”
