108 trees saved from axe adapt to new home

BENGALURU: As many as 108 trees that escaped the axe have survived in their new houses after Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) transplanted them. The trees, that have been relocated to facilitate development of Namma Metro’s new line connecting Byappanahalli with ITPL, have been planted at Sri Sathya Sai Hospital in Whitefield.


Vijay Nishanth, an urban conservator who took the initiative and satisfied BMRCL to transplant the trees, faced multiple demanding situations. First, he had to persuade BBMP to grant permission for transplantation of the trees. Once he secured the nod, the challenge used to be to find a appropriate place.


“We attempted contacting multiple corporates in the house but they all grew to become us down claiming that they didn’t have the assets or space,” Nishanth said, including that the health facility after all agreed to accommodate the trees about six months in the past. The trees belonging to four households — thongam, behandi, ficus and mango — have tailored to the new place.


DC Sundresh, dean at the health facility, said the facility which provides free remedy to thousands of patients on a daily basis can surely maintain 100 trees. “At first, folks have been slightly hesitant about transplanting the trees as the method is very dear. It took approximately threeand-a-half hours to transplant every tree. BBMP didn't cooperate and delayed the permission,” he said.
