Coimbatore: The city company is renovating the hurricane water drain near Brookebond Road through protecting it up utterly with concrete, while the trendy technology recommends perforated pavement blocks and perforated metal sheets as drainage covers.
Activists said the challenge was an entire waste of fund as there isn’t any opening for the water to seep in. Corporation engineer, however, said they have got arrange holes on roadsides in one of these way that the water may easily input the drain.
“The drain connects to Valankulam lake. Renovating 500m stretch of it near Brookebond Road and putting in a footpath over it, will serve no purpose. The closing part of the drain will proceed to stay clogged, blocking water waft to the lake. The challenge was announced to desilt and widen the existing drain on Brookenond highway. The holes equipped through the engineers will likely be rendered pointless once plastic or silt covers it,” said J Daniel, civic activist.
Corporation engineer in-charge of the challenge said the holes have been made from concrete partitions and as such sand won’t input and block the water waft. “We have followed all norms and there is no doubt that it's going to ensure smooth waft of water,” the engineer said without divulging extra main points, including the price of the challenge.
However, the newly-renovated drain didn’t glance any different from the older ones arrange around the city that had already failed.
“The holes will easily get blocked. It is gloomy that the civic frame has didn't undertake the trendy technology that now not only reduces cost and guy work, but also might be arrange easily. For instance, at Lanka corner junction, architects have used perforated metal sheets in order that working water from highway may easily input the drains,” said a city-based architect.
Officials said the design was easiest and when the monsoon arrives the public would realise its capability.
