Coimbatore: Thanks to remaining week’s heavy rainfall, Noyyal river has been frequently emerging. Water has reached until Alandurai and after a couple of more showers, it is going to drift into the city and reach the lakes.

As the river comes to lifestyles, environmental activists are calling for a concerted effort from the district management to desilt the lakes, canals and in addition remove encroachments along the water bodies. “For water to achieve the lakes, the canals need to be cleaned and de-silted. Encroachments must be got rid of. We have been cleansing various city lakes, however it is the public works department that has to use equipment and blank the canals. Water will reach the lakes provided that the canals are maintained,” R Manikandan of Kovai Kulangal Kaappom Amaippu stated.


There are nearly 200 encroachments along water bodies at the Palakkad-Pollachi Road, Manikandan stated. “Though 1,400 properties had been lately got rid of, 200 properties are blocking off the canal. Water from Noyyal will reach Vellalore tank provided that those properties are got rid of,” he told TOI.


Encroachments also are rampant close to Ukkadam canal and Pudhukulam. “Sluice gates must be checked and the water bodies must be prepared for monsoon. Whenever we approached the PWD department, they blame it on loss of price range to hold out the paintings,” stated Manikandan.


According to officials, seven lakes in the city have filled up and in a couple of more weeks, the entire lakes would possibly reach full capacity. “The Kuniyamuthur channel alone takes water to 4 lakes — Sottaiyandu Kuttai, Ganganarayanasamudram, Perur Periyakkulam and Sengulam.
