Assam govt to urge Centre to exclude Kaziranga from heritage adoption scheme

GUWAHATI: Assam tourism minister Chandan Brahma on Thursday said that the state executive would write to the Centre asking it to exclude the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) from the “Adopt A Heritage” scheme, after protest broke out in several a part of the state opposing the move.
Protest through organisations including Asom Jatiyata Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU) and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) endured on Thursday opposing engagement of private firms under the scheme aimed toward making improvements to vacationer facilities in KNP and Ahom-era monuments in Sivasagar.

“Our executive will soon communicate with the Centre for with the exception of KNP since the secure house is not under Archaeological Survey of India. Let monuments under ASI be incorporated within the scheme,” Brahma instructed media individuals.

Brahma, who took rate of tourism ministry not too long ago, said that he has referred to as a meeting on May five with the entire organisations opposing the scheme within the state.


“We are witnessing protest centering on the scheme. That is why I have determined to sit with the protesting organisations and to find out their grievances. We will try to allay their apprehensions in the course of the upcoming assembly,” Brahma said.


Activists of AJYPC, ATASU, KMSS, All Assam Students Union staged demonstration in front of 18th century monuments—Rang Ghar, Kareng Ghar and Shiva Dol in Sivsagar district and near KNP after a private corporate submitted expression of pastime for improving vacationer facilities for 5 years on those sites under the scheme.


Assam Tourism Development Corporation chairman, Jayanta Malla Baruah on Wednesday said that submission of expression of pastime didn't imply that contract has been given to that specific corporate.


Under the scheme, 93 monuments across the country has been selected for attractive non-public, public sector firms and folks for turning into 'Monument Mitras' through adopting those sites for the advance of vacationer facilities as a part of their company social duty (CSR) for 5 years.
