Coimbatore: Alleging that betel nut manufacturing has come down to a mere three per cent in the recent years, a gaggle of farmers on Monday filed a petition to the collector urging him to take necessary steps to determine a trade centre in the district.
One of the primary reasons for the dip in manufacturing is drought and loss of facilities for gross sales, S Palanisamy of Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association stated. “Betel nuts bushes were cultivated on over 20,000 acres of land across Pollachi, Mettupalayam and Thondamuthur region about 10 years ago and the manufacturing used to be over 20%. The land under cultivation has been diminished to simply 3,000 acres. Farmers opted out as they do not have a say over the price because of loss of trade centre,” he stated, explaining that whilst farmers in neighbouring states may just fix the price, Tamil Nadu farmers were compelled to sell the nuts at the buyers’ worth.
Traders from North India, mostly from Maharashtra, purchase the nuts at a inexpensive charge and export them to international countries for a high benefit, a farmer stated. “While the nuts were sold at a median of Rs 30 per kilogram, the exports worth is Rs 50 per kilogram,” he stated.
