B'luru: Slum dwellers still use collapsed bridge

BENGALURU: The collapse of the foot bridge that connects Isro Colony slum with Cambridge Layout in east Bengaluru has come as a bolt from the blue for citizens as they've no way to get entry to the principle highway. Despite risk, the slum citizens now stroll at the collapsed bridge to achieve Cambridge Layout.
“It isn't secure to walk on what remains of the bridge, but this is the one means out to fetch water or to get entry to the principle highway,” saidRocky Melvin Fernandes, from the slum. “Since it’s summer vacations, there are a lot of kids taking part in in the slum always. They will be curious and it is going to be exhausting to stay them away from bridge. It is a risk.”

Another resident, who was once peeved that nobody from the BBMP inspected the damage, mentioned, “How will women go over in an emergency? Or what if it rains in the night time?”

Vijayalakshmi S, II PU pupil of a BBMP-run college, mentioned she was once leaving home for varsity when the incident befell, leading to pandemonium throughout. “It was once shocking,” she mentioned. “I needed to keep home and pass over class.”

The slum, situated off Sai Baba Temple Road at the back of ESI Hospital, is on defence land, but citizens say their households have been living there for decades. “The BBMP built the bridge eight years ago after much persuasion,” mentioned Shabari Nathan. “There are prison battles going on with regard to transferring of the slum from defence land to Bidaralli in Bengaluru south.”

Nathan mentioned desilting of the drain will have resulted in the collapse. “The columns supporting the bridge collapsed,” he mentioned. “It, most likely, weakened after BBMP started desilting work a couple of months ago. The silt had now been dumped in the midst of the drain.”

Times View

While those that have been at the bridge when it collapsed will have to depend themselves fortunate — the damage to existence and limb will have been some distance worse — the incident is a grim reminder of poor upkeep of the town's civic infrastructure. Must it take a calamity for the civic agency to grasp that its infrastructure is crumbling? Considering they've been living at the land for decades, the citizens of Isro Colony deserve an enduring highway. A permanent method to the land dispute would be the cherry at the cake.
