Burglars take Rs 9.3 crore gold from bank in TN

CHENNAI: Burglars escaped with 32kg of gold jewelry worth round ?9.28 crore from a Bank of India branch in Tiruvallur town, round 50km from right here, on Sunday evening.

The police on Monday said the suspects used replica keys to enter the financial institution. Officials found out the robbery once they arrived to open the branch on Monday after the weekend vacation.

Investigators said a financial institution employee discovered the shutter locks open when he arrived at 10am. The burglars had opened and cleaned out a minimum of one large locker, in which the financial institution positioned consumers’ jewelry. Investigators, who suspect an insider’s hand, have detained eight workers for questioning. They said the burglars had keys to all of the rooms in the branch and to the locker that they opened.

That do not have been possible without the help of any person in the financial institution, an investigating officer said.

“We are learning photos from the financial institution’s surveillance device to see if someone else was once involved,” the officer said.

The branch is on the first ground of a three-storey construction, above a division store, on Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Tiruvallur.
