Condemn moral policing: Subhankar Chakraborty

KOLKATA: Former Asutosh College important Subhankar Chakraborty, who was once accused of ethical policing, has joined the nationwide clamour of protest against offended Metro Railways’ passengers who had reportedly thrashed a pair for embracing in public.

After Monday’s incident, the octogenarian is upset with the rising intolerance of people that simply come to blows at the moment when in confrontation over any issue. “I noticed part of the photos where the couple was being heckled. How can people take legislation in their very own palms and start bashing up somebody? I strongly condemn this act. I'm against moral policing,” says the previous vice chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University.

Way again in 1996, Chakraborty was in the midst of a controversy for implementing a dress code on scholars. But in step with him, “I had never imposed a dress code on scholars. I only said an individual should dress retaining in mind the place, time and instance. There’s a difference between liberty and license. However, it is for the person to make the selection. Post-retirement in 2001, I arrange an establishment known as Niva Ananda Vidyalaya where women are allowed to wear salwar kameez since I understand that it may well be tricky for them to wear saris. That explains my stand.”

Girls, he maintains, have a powerful sixth sense. “They can simply perceive the intensions of an individual thru their touch. If the lady had an issue within the compartment, she should had been allowed to talk out. Why do others have to jump into the fray and hurl abuses?” he asks.

The Metro incident has precipitated him to wonder if Kolkata is turning into a town of anti-social components. “Where is the restraint? Are we being rational or irrational? Why are we getting so intolerant? This isn't the Kolkata that I do know.”
