Cong candidate seeking votes in name of religion: Sheikh

Dharwad: Senior JD(S) leader Nizamuddin Sheikh has urged election officers to ensure that no candidate seeks votes in the title of caste and faith.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, he alleged that Congress candidate from Hubballi-Dharwad West Ismail Tamatgar was once making moulvis urge the group members to vote for him in violation of the fashion code of conduct. “Tamatgar after making sure that there is no Muslim candidate against him from Janata Dal(S) is now intimidating impartial Muslim candidates in the fray and pressurizing them to retire from the competition. The group members supporting impartial candidate Maktum Sogalad are being threatened by Ismail’s supporters,” Sheikh alleged.

Meanwhile, JD(U) candidate Javed Amhad Belgaumkar has filed a grievance with the Election Commission and at Suburban police station here against Tamatgar. Belgaumkar alleged that the supporters of Ismail threatened him of dire penalties if he did not retire from the competition.

He further said that supporters of Ismail ransacked his house when he refused to budge. Belgaumkar also sought protection for him and his family.
