Dhobis at ghat fail to get cover for illegal sheds

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court has declined washermen at Dhobi Ghat in Mahalaxmi aid from demolition of illegal buildings there.
A vacation bench of Justice Anil Menon and Justice Bharati Dangre on Monday heard a petition via 17 washermen in the hunt for to restrain BMC from taking motion on show-cause notices served to them between April 20 and May 2 for violating licences.

Their suggest argued that as part of their paintings of washing and drying clothes they had strung several drying lines, which the BMC sought after to tug down.

The judges took word of a photograph which showed a bathing stone at ground level with positive buildings walled up round 3 aspects. “In the background, there are a minimum of 3 metal staircases supported via metal columns which can also be easily noticed. These are pucca buildings,” the bench said in its order.

The washermen’s suggest said the staircases have been put in to get admission to drying lines fastened at the next level.

The BMC suggest said the staircases accessed the ground-plus-one-level buildings, atop which drying lines have been fastened. She said the petitioners’ live and in addition illegally cook there. She said the washermen had taken advantage of the washing stone licences to put up the illegal buildings.

“In some of the pictures, we noticed the drying lines pass across several AC sheets which appear to be the roof of a few construction. It seems that there are buildings which are lined which might be publish and on most sensible drying lines are put in,” the bench said.

The BMC suggest said the petitioners would now not be prohibited from carrying on their regimen paintings. The bench said if the buildings have been built opposite to the licence stipulations, “it's not conceivable for this court to grant any protection”.

Adjourning the case ahead of the regular court in June, the judges said the BMC can be entitled to take steps based on the legislation.
