Coimbatore: Banana farmers in Karamadai, Annur and Mettupalayam was a happy lot throughout the Ramadan season. Traders from Kerala used to shop for nendran bananas in bulk, as people staring at rapid there would destroy it via having nendran bananas. But this year, due to drought and insufficient rainfall, nendran yield has been significantly hit.
The nendran variety banana takes 3 months to mature, said farmers. “As there wasn’t ok rainfall, banana cultivation in round 2,850 hectares used to be wiped out in Annur North taluk,” said M Ammasaikutti, a farmer. “Almost 80% of the banana cultivation has wilted. Usually, after Onam, it's throughout Ramadan that nendran bananas are essentially the most sought after and the prices move up. But this year, as plants wilted due to water shortage, a number of farmers have incurred critical loss,” he said.
One kilogram of nendran banana can be offered at Rs 65 throughout Ramadan, while throughout other seasons, it would be Rs 15, said farmers.
Horticulture department officials said the acreage of banana cultivation had lowered due to water scarcity. Banana cultivation, which used to be round 6,400 hectares final year, has come right down to round five,400 hectares this year. “But, owing to the nice summer showers this year, we think the yield subsequent season to be good,” said an authentic.
Overall banana cultivation within the district had come down due to the failed monsoon final season. “As the crop period of banana is 8 to nine months, they had been significantly hit due to the failed monsoon. Water shortage had caused irrigated fields to fail,” said the authentic.
The officials be expecting the present summer showers to boost the cultivation within the coming season. The department is promoting drip irrigation scheme so as to building up banana cultivation area within the district.
