AHMEDABAD: Police in quite a lot of districts of Gujarat have won a faux letter, purportedly from the Election Commission of India, asking for a "discreet inquiry" into an EVM machine "scam."
Gandhinagar police on Wednesday registered a case of forgery against the unidentified sender.
"We won the letter on May 25, purportedly from the EC, asking for a "discreet inquiry" into EVM (Electronic Voting Machine) rip-off and a "confidential file", Gandhinagar superintendent of police Virendra Singh Yadav stated.
"The letter gave the look to be faux, and after confirming that with the state election commission, we registered an FIR as of late," Yadav stated.
A case underneath IPC section 465 (forgery) was once registered and police had been probing who sent the letter, he stated.
Similar letters had been won through police in any other districts too, and the EC has taken be aware of this, the SP stated.
The letter won through Gandhinagar police also bore a faux signature of the deputy leader electoral officer of Gujarat.
"If there's a problem with EVM machine, then underneath the confidential police inquiry, you should investigate rip-off of the EVM machine...You should ship us efficient file of the EVM machine rip-off inside 30 days in any case...You need to stay this file utterly confidential," the letter read.
There had been no elections scheduled in Gujarat this month. The letter did not check with any explicit election, the officer stated.
