BENGALURU: Several households in the city are fretting: housemaids are both absent, or arrive late for paintings. These women are getting busy with campaigns for politicians who are wanting folks to do “floor paintings”, and make some fast bucks.
Ground paintings comprises canvassing door-to-door, creating awareness about candidates in residential localities, distributing pamphlets and raising slogans.
Jade Krishna, an agent who gathers folks for canvassing, mentioned, “Most folks he hires are women, younger and middle-aged. They are despatched in teams of 30 to 50 on morning and night time rounds, for which every of them is paid Rs 500, along side food packets. Garment staff and folks from financial weaker phase (EWS) colonies are also roped in,” he added.
Shanthamma N, a resident of Mallathahalli, mentioned she doesn’t thoughts skipping her regular paintings as canvassing gets her fast money. “All I have to do is spend 2 to 3 hours in the morning and night time,” she mentioned.
Kanniyamma N, a maid in Banashankari locality, mentioned, “They pay Rs 200 for a morning session, or Rs 500 for canvassing in the morning and night time.”
Some housemaids and garment staff manage both regular paintings and campaigning. “I earn Rs 4,000 according to space and paintings at 4 properties on a daily basis. But lifestyles in Bengaluru is expensive. What's flawed in making hay all the way through elections, when I will earn at least Rs five,000 in 10 days?” asks Karumari L. a.resident of Mahadevapura.
Shanthala Ok, a resident of Yelahanka, mentioned her maid’s telephone stays “now not reachable” and neither does she take calls in the mornings these days. “We know she is out canvassing. Since it’s just for a couple of days, we will modify,” she added.
Sister Celia, founder member of Karnataka Domestic Workers’ Union, says there's not anything flawed in domestic or garment staff joining campaigns as long as they don't promote their votes to parties. “But payments are a problem right here too. Agents who rent women staff don’t pay them the whole amount. In Chitradurga for example, staff are paid Rs 150 for canvassing in rural spaces and Rs 200 in towns. Even right here, the whole amount doesn’t succeed in the women,” she added.
