Karnataka: TOI journo manhandled, illegally confined by minister Sait’s men

BENGALURU/MYSURU: Journalist Shivendra Urs, a stringer with The Times of India, Mysuru, was once manhandled and illegally confined, allegedly through the supporters of Karnataka's primary and secondary education minister Tanveer Sait, when he was once overlaying his election marketing campaign.
In a criticism to the police and Karnataka chief electoral officer Sanjiv Kumar, Urs alleged that he was once heckled, intimidated and in the end confined in a room for about 20 minutes through Sait’s supporters, when he was once on accountability in Narasimharaja constituency in Mysuru city.

Acting at the criticism, Kumar in Bengaluru mentioned they have taken up an inquiry and appropriate action will likely be taken in opposition to those responsible for preserving the journalist in illegal confinement.

The Mysuru police filed a case in opposition to the minister and his supporters below IPC sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing harm) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

In the FIR, Urs mentioned round 10.45am on Monday, a gaggle of Sait’s supporters manhandled and confined him in a house in Gayathripuram Ist Stage, and threatened him with dire consequences.

“My scribbling pad was once snatched, my pen was once grabbed and three of his supporters who were part of the minister’s entourage, held my hand and shoulder strongly, fighting my movement. Later, they dragged me to a house, from the spot the place Sait was once canvassing. The incident has left me shattered and I have evolved a fear of dealing with threats from them,” he mentioned in his criticism.

Urs mentioned the supporters literally obstructed him from carrying out his accountability as a journalist. Sait’s aides heckled him and requested him why he was once reporting concerning the marketing campaign.


“The supporters threatened me and dared me to leave the realm. When I made an try to go away the spot fearing my safety, they dragged me, heckled me, photographed me and illegally confined me in a house and insisted that I talk to Sait. He came and wondered me about TOI carrying an editorial on SDPI candidate Abdul Majeed, and accused the paper of supporting SDPI. He gave me a lecture about journalism,” Urs mentioned.


Urs demanded action in opposition to Sait’s supporters for their misconduct.


Meanwhile, the Mysuru District Journalists’ Association condemned the attack on Urs and demanded speedy action in opposition to those responsible for the crime.


However, the minister denied the fee, announcing his supporters had mistaken Urs for an SDPI activist and he had helped free the journalist.
