Man held with fake notes worth Rs 3 lakh from Jatni station

BHUBANESWAR: The directorate of earnings intelligence (DRI) here on Friday blew the lid off a racket involved within the smuggling of Fake Indian Currency Notes from Bangladesh to India with the arrest of a 38-year-old man from Kamakhya-Yesvantpur AC Express at Jatni station, at the outskirts of town.

Fake notes worth rupees 3 lakh, all in Rs 2,000 denomination, were seized from his ownership.

A DRI supply said the accused, whose id has now not been printed, belonged to Pahad Gav in Jharkhand's Sahebganj district. He was travelling from Malda (West Bengal) to Bengaluru when DRI officials intercepted him within the working educate a few kilometres ahead of Jatni station. "We had received intelligence input about smuggling of FICN. While searching his bag, we found fake currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination in two bundles packed in a violet polythene packet and kept inside an air bag," a DRI officer said.


During interrogation, the accused said he obtained the pretend notes from a man in Kaliachak house of Malda, a known hub for FICN movement. He advised us that the person, who gave him the pretend notes, brought it from Bangladesh. "We are interrogating him to elicit information about the supplier and know the trail of supply and delivery of the fake notes. Since the fake notes were smuggled into India from Bangladesh, we are also trying to find out whether the notes were printed in that country or its neighbouring nations," the reputable said. The accused advised the DRI that he intended to switch the FICN in Bengaluru mainly by purchasing garments or exchanging the ones with small investors.


The DRI officials additionally foiled two dramatic get away bids by the alleged racketeer. Sources said the accused reportedly made the primary get away attempt by trying to jump from the working educate. "When we were checking his bag, he requested us to let him use the toilet. Two of our men were taking him to the train's toilet when he tried to flee. He was about to jump when our personnel pulled him back," a DRI reputable said.


He was later dropped at the DRI's regional office amid tight security. But little did the officials know that he would attempt to get away once once more. Sources said when DRI officials were busy with paper paintings, he ran towards the go out gate. When he found the gate locked, he went to the DRI office balcony and attempted to jump. "Luckily, one of our officers overpowered him," the reputable said.
