55% of 2017 rly deaths because of monitor crossing

Numerous campaigns initiated via the railways have failed to deter monitor crossing, which is still the biggest killer on Mumbai railways.

The 4 commuters, who lost their lives in Monday’s mishap, had also taken a shortcut to stroll down to Poisar.

“There is a ‘kachha’ trail subsequent to Poisar subway, which commuters use for reaching the railway tracks. Most trains heading towards north Mumbai halt on the sign near Poisar subway, between Borivli and Kandivli stations. Poisar residents hop off those trains, when they halt, and move the tracks to succeed in the ‘kachha’ trail. This is dangerous as trains cross in each directions at prime pace but they throw warning to the wind,” stated a senior GRP authentic.

Track crossing is a penal offence. The railways have attempted each tactic to deter monitor crossing—from stringent prosecution, to creating announcements and playing jingles in trains, handing roses to shame offenders, dressing up RPF team of workers as ‘Yamraj’ (God of death) to drill sense into offenders and putting up graphic indicators near tracks, but not anything works.

“We need more than 3 foot overbridges (FoBs) in line with platform and most escalators so commuters don't seem to be tempted to hop throughout tracks. Deploying more uniformed team of workers, developing better infrastructure and building boundary partitions during the railway community are the only solutions,” stated an activist.
