BHUBANESWAR: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday accused BJP leaders from Odisha of supporting the Chhattisgarh govt's initiatives on the Mahanadi river, which affect Odisha's interests.
Patnaik, who could also be ruling Biju Janata Dal's President, additionally claimed that the state Bharatiya Janata Party leaders have been "shedding crocodile tears" on the issue.
Launching the Mahanadi Surakhya Yatra at Sukhasoda in Jharsuguda district, Patnaik stated each the Centre and Chhattisgarh governments led through the BJP had followed an anti-Odisha method.
"BJP leaders in Odisha are supporting Chhattisgarh for its projects on the Mahanadi. Some leaders are shedding crocodile tears. If they are concerned about the welfare of Odisha and its people, they should oppose the Chhattisgarh government," he added.
He stated that once the state govt moved the Supreme Court, it constituted a tribunal to resolve the water-sharing issue.
"Mahanadi remains dry in most months of the year, except during rainy season. The Mahanadi in Odisha is drying up due to construction of barrages by Chhattisgarh. The water-level at the Hirakud dam is also decreasing," the Chief Minister stated.
He stated that there might be loss of water for cultivation of Rabi plants in Odisha consequently, whilst fishermen will even dealing with losses.
Mahanadi Surakhya Yatra is scheduled to hide a distance of one,585 km through 15 districts and culminate at Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district.
In reaction, the state BJP stated the BJD is making an attempt to make the Mahanadi dispute a topic in ensuing Assembly elections.
"When a tribunal has already been formed, there is no point in holding an agitation. The BJD is trying to make it an issue ahead of the polls," stated BJP Spokesperson Golak Mohapatra.
