Pre-monsoon showers likely to give boost to agriculture in South Karnataka

MYSURU: Above standard rainfall in the pre-monsoon season is more likely to benefit farmers in South Karnataka, opined experts because the Southwest Monsoon struck the coast of Kerala.

Director of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) GS Srinivasa Reddy instructed TOI that South Karnataka had recorded more rainfall in the pre-monsoon season in 2018 in comparison to previous years. “Barring Raichur, all different districts of the state have won just right pre-monsoon rainfall. In fact, South Karnataka has won above standard rainfall,” he stated.

Attributing the heavy pre-monsoon showers to a couple of climate programs shaped in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, Reddy stated, “The high winds pushed rainy clouds towards the state from either side, and we witnessed just right pre-monsoon rainfall.”

Senior farm superintendent on the University of Agricultural Sciences, Naganahalli P Prakash believes that the pre-monsoon showers will have a positive impact on agricultural production. “Farmers can tart sowing plants such as urad dal, moong dal, and many others. Good rainfall in the pre-monsoon season signifies that farmers can get started arrangements for the monsoon season briefly,” he stated.

Indian Meteorological Department, Bengaluru centre, estimates that South Karnataka region won 45% more rainfall, in comparison to standard between May 17 and 23.
