TRICHY: A dawn-to-dusk basic shutdown used to be seen in Thirumanur town and adjoining villages in Tamil Nadu's Ariyalur district on Saturday to condemn the expansion of a river sand quarry on Kollidam river mattress, a distributary of Cauvery. Protesters, alleging that groundwater desk near Kollidam river banks used to be depleted already, claimed that continued operation of quarry will disrupt complete ingesting water scheme supplying potable water to 8 districts, including Trichy.
Protesting villagers said that the state executive used to be running a river sand quarry on Kollidam river financial institution near Thirumanur for more than a decade. Recently, the federal government via district management has proposed to quarry river sand from a new web site near northern part of present quarry, and works had been said to have commenced a few days back. Alleging that river sand quarrying thus far has depleted the groundwater desk in a drastic way, farmers objecting the transfer approached the Madras top courtroom in quest of a keep order. However, because the sand quarrying works commenced in the new web site a few days back, agitated farmers and buyers in conjunction with the villagers of Thirumanur hamlets displayed their displeasure by means of staring at basic shutdown on Saturday.
“As many as eight districts - including Trichy, Thanjavur, and Ariyalur - depend on complete ingesting water scheme for which water used to be sourced from Kollidam mattress. Permitting the operation of sand quarry further would affect the water supply to 8 districts because the capacity to recharge groundwater will decline due to quarrying,” Varanavasi Ok Rajendran, state secretary, Consortium of Indian Farmers Association, advised TOI. Traders collaborating in the protest in strengthen of Thirumanur villagers and farmers in Ariyalur had downed their shutters on Saturday, more than 500 stores participated in the close down.
