The forgotten steps where leaders shared dais, ideas

MYSURU: During 1950s and 60s, the stairs of Town Hall used to be the one major campaigning position for the politicians. Candidates belonging to other political events used to percentage the similar dais and take turns to handle the folk.

Now, quite a lot of political events spend lakhs handiest to set up a stage and get other people for his or her rally, however in the ones days, many of the applicants from quite a lot of political events used to sit on the same platform and address the folk. Such used to be the courtesy and warmth that if a candidate asked his opponents to make way for his speech, they used to just accept it. They spoke about what they are going to do for the folk, instead of just attacking their opponents, mentioned a resident of town who has been witness to such debates.

Historian P V Nanjaraja Urs mentioned, “Town Hall used to be the one public house. Political leaders used to stand on the steps and address the gathering. There was once just two large audio system on either side of the Town Hall steps for his or her speech. There was once nearly 200 other people to listen to quite a lot of applicants’ speech. The applicants used to speak for ten to 15 minutes and make way for others, which is tricky to believe in reward day politics. Those days the politicians had friendly fights and there used to be rarely any enmity, however now one can come throughout secret deals amongst political events. Apart from this, there were rarely three to four events, together with Congress, Samajwadi Party, Communist Party and Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party.”

Even Jawaharlal Nehru had delivered a public speech at this Town Hall, while Vallabhai Patel had a public speech at Gandhi Square, he added.

D S Jagadish, an 87-year-old freedom fighter, mentioned: “Even Atal Bihari Vajpayee delivered a public speech on the Town Hall. This used to be the most wanted and preferred position for many of the political leaders. Those days politicians had been more first rate and they never used singular words in opposition to anybody, which isn't the same now. The present-day politics can’t be in comparison to the ones days. It used to be great to peer all the politicians sharing same dais. In the ones days rarely any money used to be spent on public speeches, however nowadays the politicians spend lakhs of rupees just to impress their leaders and citizens.”
