GUWAHATI: The Assam Police have arrested 16 folks in reference to the lynching of two Guwahati-based youths in Karbi Anglong district via villagers who mistook them to be child abductors, authorities said on Sunday.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Mukesh Agarwala said that police have been looking for more folks involved in the Friday night incident.
Agarwala said that the situation in Dokmoka, the place the killings happened, used to be beneath keep an eye on.
"There was tension in the area following the incident but it is under control now," he said.
"In 4 to five villages round Dokmoka, pretend posts went viral on social media about 'xopadhara' or child abductors in the area. Preliminary investigation says that the people in the area suspected the two youths as child lifters and attacked them.
"We enchantment to folks not to imagine rumours and social media posts. We additionally enchantment to the people to tell the police right away if they in finding someone spreading rumours and hate messages," Agarwala added.
Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath have been brutally killed via a mob near Kathilangso waterfall. The incident has been broadly condemned.
