Udhagamandalam: Thirty-three shops in the Ooty municipal market were sealed by officers on Tuesday for 2 years of rent arrears.

He said, “Out of 53 shops for which the final date lapsed for paying the rental, 33 shops were sealed on Tuesday with police protection. We couldn’t seal the rest of the malls as shopkeepers accrued and staged a protest.”

Braving the rain, round 500 shopkeepers accrued in front of the Ooty municipal office and staged an indication. A gathering took place between municipal officers and office-bearers of the municipal market merchants’ association. Later, the malls out there were opened in the afternoon.

“We have requested the merchants to pay the revised rental due in installment foundation. Shopkeepers of the 33 sealed shops paid 50% of the rent arrears. The revised rental is effective from July 1, 2016,” said Ravi. He added, “Final notices shall be issued to the rest of the shopkeepers in the municipal market.”

Mustafa, president, Ooty municipal market merchants’ association, told TOI: “Normally, there is a revision in rent each three years by 15% but even so 18% surcharge on it. But, now the renewed rental pattern is very exorbitant.”

He said, “Ooty municipal market is more than a century old. We had been operating the malls there since from our ancestral period. Hence, we seek reasonable attention in revising the rental value”.
