Army firm, cantonment roads to remain closed

HYDERABAD: A day after defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman made no bones about her displeasure over 14 public roads nonetheless being saved in ‘no-go’ zone in Secunderabad Cantonment, top Army officials on Wednesday stuck to the mentioned place that roads must be closed citing ‘safety issues’. Residents and commuters, however, are worried that Wednesday’s convergence meeting of Local Military Authority (LMA) and police brass was getting ready the bottom for approaching closure of roads.




At the meeting, Army officials stressed that Secunderabad Cantonment and areas like Golconda, Mehdipatnam and Bowenpally are porous and roads just about them lift safety issues. The Army is looking for our cooperation owing to the continuing tussle between LMA and the agitating residents.” The ministry of defence had issued orders that roads in Cantonments can be closed just for ‘safety causes’ by following due procedures.


Reacting sharply, policy analyst and academician Mohan Guruswamy, a resident of Yapral, identified that Army officials and paramilitary forces in areas like Kashmir and Assam work and are living amongst civilians with roads passing thru their areas. “When there are genuine issues, we unquestionably perceive. But, in Secunderabad, it is a Cantonment area the place other folks have been the use of the roads. Civilians have taken out non violent protests like candlelight marches. Several Army families are living out of doors the Cantonment areas like Sainikpuri, Vayupuri and different colonies with none threat or safety worry. The Army is taking it as a status. The meeting also sparked fears amongst activists pitching for opening of roads that they is also implicated in criminal instances. S Anoop Kumar of Open all Secunderabad Cantonment Area Roads despatched letters to Sitharaman, KT Rama Rao and senior officials, expressing worry over ‘false instances’ being foisted on the agitators.
