Bangkok to Delhi: Preferred route to sneak in gold

NEW DELHI: Smugglers may be using a particular community to get gold into India — arriving in Delhi by flight AI-333 from Bangkok prior to heading to Amritsar on AI-0462.

In the past 3 days on my own, the customs department had seized round 10kg gold value nearly Rs three crore at IGI Airport and stuck 3 flyers following the same route. These had been a part of the 14 arrests made on the airport throughout the same duration, with the Customs seizing round 26kg gold value Rs eight crore in five circumstances. The arrested incorporated six Chinese, one Iranian, two Indians and five from Azerbaijan.

The customs said that in the first case, a passenger, coming from Bangkok, was arrested after 1kg of gold was found concealed in his rectum. He was to take the connecting flight to Amritsar. Similar patterns had been detected when two Chinese passengers had been arrested for looking to smuggle in 6kg gold.

In the 3rd case, a bag which was being transferred to the Amritsar flight was found with 3kg gold.

In another seizure, an Iranian was held after his arrival from Dubai with 8kg gold concealed in specially designed pockets of his jacket. On June 11, 4 Chinese, together with two girls, had been held for trying to herald 6kg gold, out of which 5kg had been concealed in their rectum.

Officials said the high number of contemporary foreign currency echange seizures may well be related to a spike in gold seizures. “The currency can come back in the form of gold,” added an official.
