Buses off road, commuters pay more for autos

KOLKATA: Private buses have began going off the road even ahead of the June 7 strike in opposition to the government’s refusal to revise fares, leaving commuters at the mercy of vehicles. Kar’s experience isn't a one-off case. Now, I take a bus to achieve Taratala after which board an auto from there. My commuting value has risen from Rs 16 to Rs 40. I hope the buses will come back soon,” he rued.


Private buses are the biggest carriers for city’s commuters. They lift 42.eight lakh passengers day by day. Though there was tremendous improvement in products and services of buses run by state transport undertakings (STUs), they convey only 15.6 lakh passengers. Autos, on the other hand, ferry 31.5 lakh passengers an afternoon. But with the absence of buses, demand for vehicles have grown manifold, making products and services extra erratic. Also, a upward push in demand has brought back the outdated woes of truncated routes and arbitrary fares.
