Dalit woman assaulted for sitting on chair

AHMEDABAD: A forty-eight-year-old Dalit lady anganwadi employee tasked with issuing Aadhaar cards, was allegedly attacked via a member of the Darbar neighborhood, for “sitting on a chair on the panchayat office”.

The lady, Pallavi Jadhav, is the aunt of Maulik Jadhav, who was assaulted final month for adding the suffix ‘Sinh’ to his name.

According to the FIR registered at Koth police station in Ahmedabad district on Thursday, Jayrajsinh Vegad, one of the vital 10 accused individuals, asked Pallavi why she was sitting on a chair and kicked the chair, inflicting Pallavi to fall off it. Nine other males of the Darbar neighborhood then came to the panchayat office and began abusing Dalits with casteist slurs and attacked them with sticks and iron-pipes.

“Pallavi Jadhav was excited about Aadhaar card paintings on the panchayat office, at the campus of the village school. Vegad came there, abused her with casteist slurs and knocked her off the chair. Nine individuals (all from the Darbar neighborhood) then came and attacked her with sticks, pipes and a bladed agricultural put into effect,” reads the FIR.

“When her son Jigar and husband Ganpat rushed to the spot to rescue her, they were additionally attacked via Vadher and 10 other accused individuals.”


The accused were known as Kanu Chavda, Gambhu Vegad, Sanjay Vegad, Bharat Vegad, Lalu Vegad, Prabhat Vegad, Ghanshyam Vegad, Mahendra Vegad, Ranu Chavda, Jayraj Vegad and the son of Babu Nathubhai whose name is not recognized.


Maulik tol TOI, “The Darbars were seeking to harass Dalits after I lodged a grievance towards members in their neighborhood members who had objected to my the use of ‘Sinh’ with my name. The lady who was overwhelmed brutally is my aunt and is being handled at a non-public medical institution for severe injuries to her head.”


A senior police officer showed the incident and said pass proceedings has been filed. Members of the Darbar neighborhood were booked under for assault, prison intimidation and under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
