HC grants anticipatory bail to Mukul Roy

KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to BJP leader and former railways minister Mukul Roy on a bond of Rs 50,000 in connection with a complaint over the demise of his "mentor" Mrinal Kanti Singha Roy in 2015.
A division bench comprising Justices Joymalyo Bagchi and R K Kapur directed Roy to meet the investigating officer at Bijpur police station in North 24 Parganas district as soon as a fornight, except for furnishing Rs 50,000 bail bond as stipulations for granting anticipatory bail to him.

Roy, who used to be a senior Trinamool Congress leader before joining the BJP in November remaining year, used to be additionally directed by the court to cooperate with the investigation by the state police.

The court had in January directed the police to not arrest Roy during the pendancy of his anticipatory bail application.

Roy had moved the bail application challenging an FIR filed by the sister of Mrinal Kanti Singha Roy who used to be mentioned to be his mentor during his early days in politics and had died of headaches after a highway twist of fate.

Singha Roy had allegedly suffered a highway twist of fate on June 8, 2011 at around nighttime while returning home at Kanchrapara from Halisahar in North 24 Parganas district and used to be treated at a nursing home there and then at a non-public clinic in Kolkata.

Following his release from the clinic, Singha Roy used to be kept in a hotel below the supervision of Roy, who used to be then in TMC, consistent with the complaint.


Singha Roy's sister Sonali alleged that he used to be shifted to the Kolkata clinic and on his release used to be kept within the hotel on the directions of Roy instead of being taken home.


It used to be mentioned that during his keep at the hotel, Singha Roy suffered a throat infection and died after extended treatment at the city clinic.


Sonali alleged that she had learnt from the clinic that Singha Roy had suffered inside haemorrhage, which she claimed could be because of critical damage and suspected Roy's role within the matter.


Lawyers for Sonali Singha Roy had instructed the high court that her attempts to hotel a police complaint had failed, following which she had moved the local court which directed the police to document an FIR.
