MYSURU/BENGALURU: A video clip that shows Karnataka number one and secondary training minister N Mahesh running a couple of picket slippers (or padukas) over his frame went viral on social media on Tuesday. The months-old video has surprised supporters of the minister, who is the sole representative from the BSP in the HD Kumaraswamy cabinet.
In an earlier video, Mahesh, who represents the Kollegal meeting segment, used to be observed falling at the toes of Suttur Mutt pontiff Shivaratri Deshikendra.
The clip comes a few weeks after a video confirmed legislative meeting speaker KR Ramesh Kumar performing pada puja to a boy.
Some Dalit activists have puzzled minister Mahesh’s superstitious ideals like maintaining the slipper and falling at the pontiff’s toes. A couple of others have justified the minister’s act, pronouncing he’s following a practice prevalent in his place of birth. Sources stated the video of Mahesh with the padukas is 2 months old.
Minister says it’s a part of custom
Sources stated the video of Mahesh with the seer used to be a contemporary one, and the only with the padukas (a couple of picket slippers) is 2 months old. “Kollegal — Mahesh’s constituency — has many Lingayat-Veerashaiva citizens and the Suttur seer is very influential. So the minister met him and sought his blessings,” stated a supporter of the minister.
About the padukas video, the minister stated it used to be finished as a part of the customs followed in Devanpete Mutt, Kollegal, during the meeting elections. “I don’t believe in a single religion. I appreciate all religions and customs. There’s no wish to hype the subject now,” he stated.
