MYSURU/BENGALURU: A video clip that displays Karnataka number one and secondary training minister N Mahesh operating a pair of wood slippers (or padukas) over his body went viral on social media on Tuesday. The months-old video has stunned supporters of the minister, who is the only consultant from the BSP within the HD Kumaraswamy cupboard.

In an previous video, Mahesh, who represents the Kollegal assembly section, was seen falling at the toes of Suttur Mutt pontiff Shivaratri Deshikendra.

The clip comes a couple of weeks after a video confirmed legislative assembly speaker KR Ramesh Kumar appearing pada puja to a boy.

Some Dalit activists have questioned minister Mahesh’s superstitious beliefs like keeping the slipper and falling at the pontiff’s toes. A few others have justified the minister’s act, announcing he’s following a practice prevalent in his fatherland. Sources mentioned the video of Mahesh with the padukas is 2 months outdated.

Minister says it’s a part of custom

Sources mentioned the video of Mahesh with the seer was a contemporary one, and the only with the padukas (a pair of wood slippers) is 2 months outdated. “Kollegal — Mahesh’s constituency — has many Lingayat-Veerashaiva citizens and the Suttur seer may be very influential. So the minister met him and sought his blessings,” mentioned a supporter of the minister.

About the padukas video, the minister mentioned it was accomplished as a part of the customs followed in Devanpete Mutt, Kollegal, during the assembly elections. “I don’t believe in a single faith. I respect all religions and customs. There’s no want to hype the topic now,” he mentioned.
