MYSURU: Developed by Mysuru maharaja Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, Lingambudi Lake is a popular lungspace in the town. However, inflow of sewage into the lake has resulted in the waterbody getting extremely polluted. Following court cases from the public, newly elected MLA for Krishnaraja constituency SA Ramadas carried out an inspection of the lake, and directed the officials concerned to restore the waterbody.
Accompanied by officials from Mysuru Urban Development Authority (Muda) and Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), Ramadas visited the lake in Srirampura on Monday. He took inventory of the encroachments alongside the lake’s obstacles by private layouts, inflow of sewage water and the damage sustained by the sluice gate of the lake, which resulted in floods when heavy showers lashed the city final year.
Pointing to the lake’s rich heritage, Ramadas said that it was once over 400 years’ old, and was once constructed by Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar to retailer water that flowed from a distance of 15 to 20km from the city. “Last year, the sluice gate was once broken by miscreants, and during the monsoon, the lake flooded into the residential spaces,” Ramadas said.
Lamenting the shrinking in the lake’s area, Ramadas said, “Over the years, encroachment by private layouts has resulted in the lake, which was once as soon as spread over 280 acres, shrinking. Some of these encroachers have even erected fences around the lake, and blocked its feeder canals. The underground drainage pipes from Kanakadasa Layout were illegally attached to the stormwater drain connected to the lake, leading to sewage flowing to it.”
The MLA said that he had directed officials of MCC and Muda to disconnect the UGD strains from the SWD to forestall the water in the lake from being contaminated. “I have additionally suggested officials to clear encroachments alongside the lake, and to repair the broken sluice gates,” Ramadas added.
Assuring the folk of finding a permanent strategy to the lake’s problems, he said, “The lake will regain its glory, and attract migratory birds and morning walkers.”
