Monsoon reaches Mumbai, expect flood to follow

On June 7, 2018, Mumbai received 27.6mm to 37.8mm of rainfall. Certainly no longer probably the most, but enough to throw city out of gear with water logging and behind schedule trains and flights. However, the worst is but to return. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall for town over the weekend. And as according to non-public weather forecaster Skymet, it might be the heaviest since July 26, 2005, when it rained 944mm in just 24 hours, leading to huge flooding, deaths of over 500 other folks and losses overs Rs 550 crores.

But heavy rainfall has drowned Mumbai no longer just as soon as. In fact, the maximum city has skilled monstrous floods twice already in the current decade, in 2011 and 2017. In fact in 2017, insurers had to take a success of Rs 500 crores in claims.

Being a coastal city, heavy rainfall is a given in Mumbai. Question is why are floods turning into an ordinary occurrence in the city? One of the largest causes is 150-year-old Mumbai’s drainage gadget. It is designed to take care of 2.5 cm (25mm) of rain every hour and that too provided that there is not any top tide. Two, the desilting and cleaning of drains- an annual exercise by means of town’s municipal company (BMC) isn't carried out correctly, even though BMC is the richest municipal frame in Asia with a budget larger than a number of states in the nation.

Third, the Mithi river, which drains water into Arabian Sea is choking with garbage, silt and sewage, and its floodplains encroached by means of slums. Though the management has repeatedly drawn plans to restore the river, they have got been abandoned.

Fourth, low-lying spaces close to deltas and on sinking coasts are crowded with slums making them liable to flooding.

Fifth, heavy rain clubbed with a top tide prevents rain water from flowing into the ocean, as a substitute it brings it proper back into town.

Sixth, the depleting mangroves. Mangroves mitigate the affect of torrential rains but slicing them down brings out what's a herbal barrier to flooding.
