Mumbai: Biennial polls for four MLC seats today

MUMBAI: Elections for 4 seats to the state legislative council—Mumbai graduates’, Mumbai teachers’, Konkan graduates’ and Nashik teachers’ constituencies—will probably be hung on Monday. The biennial elections have been necessitated because the phrases of Deepak Sawant of Shiv Sena (Mumbai Graduates), Kapil Patil of Lok Bharati Party (Mumbai Teachers), Niranjan Davkhare, who switched from NCP to BJP (Konkan Graduates) and Apoorva Hire, an Independent (Nashik Teachers) will finish on July 7.

The elections have assumed significance as Sena has denied price tag to state well being minister Sawant, from the Mumbai graduates’ constituency, which he represented for two consecutive phrases.


A total 71 candidates are in the fray for the 4 seats.


The polls will also witness clashes between BJP and Sena in the Konkan and Mumbai graduates’ constituencies. BJP’s Davkhare will take on Sena’s Sanjay More in the Konkan graduates’ seat, whilst in Mumbai, Vilas Potnis of Sena is pitted in opposition to BJP’s Amit Mehta; Congress and NCP have lent fortify to Independent nominee Rajendra Korde. In the Mumbai teachers’ seat, Sena’s Shivaji Shendge will conflict with sitting MLC Patil, who has fortify from Congress and NCP. BJP is backing Independent nominee Anil Deshmukh.
