Muslim men help Hindu man perform sister’s last rites

MANGALURU: In a rare gesture, a group of Muslim youths helped a Hindu family perform the last rites of a 52-year-old girl who died after struggling a cardiac arrest on Saturday.


Bhavani died at Janavasati Colony in Puttur taluk’s Vidyapura. She used to be not married. Her brother Krishna requested his family and locals to assist him habits her last rites. Till Saturday afternoon, the frame remained at Krishna’s area as none came forward to assist him.


When Krishna requested family to assist him with Bhavani’s last rites, none came forward. That is when Shaukath, Hamza, Nazeer, Riyaz & Farooq began amassing price range and helped him cremate the frame


When Shaukath, Hamza, Nazeer, Riyaz and Farooq, among others, heard about Krishna’s plight, they began amassing price range for the rites. Anganwadi instructor Rajeshwari, locals Safia and Zubaida volunteered to offer the frame a bath before it used to be shifted to the Puttur cremation ground in an ambulance. All the expenses have been crowdfunded.


“We didn't do it for publicity. We came forward to assist, not making an allowance for the caste or faith of the deceased. We wanted to send a message that the dead must not be denied the last rites,” stated Farooq.
