North East reels under floods, thousands rendered homeless

IMPHAL/GUWAHATI/AGARTALA: Incessant rain in the past 24 hours has wreaked havoc in parts of the northeast, triggering flash floods and rendering 1000's of other folks homeless in Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, officials said on Wednesday. In Assam, as many as 1,48,912 other folks have been affected in 222 villages below eight revenue circles within the districts of Biswanath, Karbi Anglong West and Karbi Anglong East, Golaghat, Karimganj and Hailakandi, in step with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) record issued lately.
Karimganj within the Barak Valley remained the worst-hit with the breaching of the Longai river at Nayadhar space. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has so far evacuated 124 other folks within the district.

The authorites have opened 71 reduction camps with Karimganj having the easiest of 54, adopted through Hailakandi 16 and Golaghat one.


In overall, 10,710 other folks have taken safe haven in reduction camps with Karimganj having the easiest at 10,100. The flood state of affairs within the other districts of the state may be being closely monitored, the officials said.


In Tripura, over 3,500 families have been rendered homeless. Though rain stopped this morning, over 500 families have been evacuated to 6 reduction camps in West Tripura's Sadar sub-division as their homes were submerged.


The water stage in Howrah river, which passes via Agartala, was once flowing moderately under the risk stage at 12 pm, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sadar Tapan Kumar Das said.


The Assam-Agartala National Highway, thought to be to be the lifeline of the state, was once opened for vehicular movement after debris were cleared late final night time.
