Peace returns to violence-hit Shillong

GUWAHATI: The violence-scarred hill town of Shillong limped again to customary on Tuesday, with out a incidents of fresh violence reported.

The Meghalaya capital had been in the grip of unrest that followed an altercation and scuffle between Punjabi citizens of Sweeper's Colony and local workers of the state-run bus service on Thursday, which escalated and resulted in unrelenting clashes between local mobs and police workforce.


A visibly relaxed Shillong went about its day as usual, overcoming the shadow of violence of the previous four days of unrest. "No more gatherings, no more stone-pelting, no tear gas shelling and no noise today...It feels good to say that Shillong is gradually returning to normalcy," East Khasi Hills district deputy commissioner PS Dkhar informed TOI. As a precautionary measure, district government clamped evening curfew from 4pm on Tuesday to 5am on Wednesday.
