Railways, Odisha plan to run luxury train soon

BHUBANESWAR: The Indian Railways and the Odisha govt are making plans to jointly introduce a luxurious train like ‘Palace on Wheels’ within the state to attract high-end and foreign vacationers.

A discussion regarding the factor used to be carried out between Sanjiv Garg, further member (tourism and catering) Railway Board, and state chief secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi. The railway board had already sent a letter to the state govt to start the carrier within the state.


Padhi stated he mentioned with Garg about introducing a luxurious train in Odisha. “We got the primary proposal these days. We will go through it properly and tell the Railways after proper govt’s order,” he added.


It might be a three way partnership between the state and the Railways. “Railways will operate rakes and take the haulage charges. But the interior furnishings might be completed by way of the state. Even the state will make a decision the path of the train,” stated a senior railway officer.


The Railways runs five luxurious trains like Maharaja Express, Palace on Wheels, Deccan Odyssey, Golden Chariot and Heritage Palace on Wheels within the states of Rajasthan, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Garg has given a presentation to the executive secretary and his colleagues at the state secretariat.


Normally the luxurious train has 9 coaches for different facilities and 12 or 13 coaches for vacationers. Every trainer has berth for 88 vacationers. Around Rs 2.5 crore is spent for making of a trainer. This type of train is also known as as ‘Train Cruise’ which will connect in style vacationer puts like Chandipur, Bhaitarkanika, Similipal, Konark, Puri, Balugaon, Chilika, Debrigarh and Sambalpur.
