Three persons killed in flood and landslide in Assam

GUWAHATI: Three persons were killed in the present spate of flood in Assam, with two persons losing their lives in a landslide caused by torrential rain in Mahur house of state’s hill district Dima Hasao on Thursday.

One individual was drowned at Bokakhat in Golaghat district of higher Assam.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that Dhansiri river in Golaghat district’s Numaligarh, Barak river in Cachar and Karimganj districts, Katakhal river in Hailakandi district and Kushiyara river in Karimganj district are in spate. The overflowing rivers grew to become the flood situation grim with just about 1.67 lakh other people in seven districts affected and over 1,300 hectare of croplands inundated.


The affected districts are Hojai, Karbi Anglong East, Karbi Anglong West, Golaghat, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar.


Karimganj in Barak valley is the worst affected district with over 70,000 other people affected in the deluge.


ASDMA officers said just about 36,000 flood-hit other people together with 4,272 kids have taken shelter in 116 relief camps.


NDRF and SDRF rescued 422 marooned other people on Thursday. Nine boats have been deployed for rescue operations in flood-hit district.
