ALLAHABAD: Large-scale violence erupted at the Arts campus of Allahabad University on Tuesday when rankings of scholars protesting eviction from hostels fought pitched battles with the police, torched a police jeep and damaged four vehicles of university staff. When the police used force, they retaliated and pelted stones. However, nobody was significantly injured.
Colonelganj police has lodged a case towards unidentified persons in reference to the violence.
Forced at the again foot, the university administration decided to put off the hostel eviction drive till further orders.
The series of events started on Monday when AU authorities, citing an Allahabad High Court directive, issued an order asking inmates of the entire hostels, either one of AU and of trusts, to vacate their rooms by means of June 11 or face forceful eviction from June 12.
On Tuesday, numerous hostellers and scholar leaders assembled at the Union corridor of the university from where they moved to the places of work of chief proctor and dean scholar welfare. Later, they took out a procession under management of AU Student Union president Avnish Yadav and reached the VC office to state a protest.
Reports stated in the meantime one of the scholar leaders were given curious about arguments with a police officer and soon the situation went out of keep an eye on. When the police cane-charged the scholars to disperse them, they assembled at the portico and pelted stones at the police.
Although nobody was injured in stone pelting, the agitated students damaged several cars, including the legit car of AU finance officer.
In the in the meantime, any individual torched a police jeep and a motorcycle parked outdoor the Union corridor. Before fire-fighters may douse the flame, both the cars had been lowered to ashes.
Following the arson, police swung into action and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the scholars, who ran to more than a few hostels situated near the Union corridor to take refuge.
