Waterlogging worry for residents as KMC delays pump deployment

KOLKATA: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has finally swung into action to check waterlogging around the city after the recent spells of showers.

KMC drainage department officers visited localities in Kidderpore, Ekbalpore, Mominpore and Behala that remained inundated for greater than 36 hours. Similarly, citizens of Mukundapur, Madurdaha, Kalikapur off EM Bypass and Topsia, Tiljala and Picnic Garden needed to keep indoors because of waterlogged streets. A senior civic legitimate conceded that the struggling of citizens of these areas can have been minimized had the drainage department pressed into carrier moveable pumps after the heavy downpour on Monday. “We can have minimized the citizens’ struggling in the worst-affected pockets. But we made extend in deploying moveable pumps which can have drained out hurricane water giving relief to the citizens,” stated a KMC drainage department legitimate.

In reality, the officers faced public ire in places like Kidderpore and Ekbalpore for failing to empty out water even after two days. Finally, the civic authorities made up our minds to press into carrier moveable pumps to empty out stagnant water from the affected areas. While two heavy duty pumps had been despatched to Ekbalpore Road, any other was used at Ibrahim Road — two worst-affected stretches in the Kidderpore space — on Tuesday. These pumps functioned for 24X7 and finally succeeded in draining out stagnant water from major areas in Kidderpore. Similarly, moveable pumps had been despatched to Silpara, Sakuntala Park and Parnasree Palli in Behala to offer local citizens relief from waterlogging. Though the pumps remained operational round-the-clock, they might now not drain out water from the entire Silpara space. However, the pumps had been effectively utilized in key stretches of Tiljala and Topsia.

Malfunctioning of Mominpore drainage pumping station also added to the waterlogging woes in Kidderpore. After a survey of the situation of pumps, Tarak Singh, MMiC (drainage), admitted that a phase of staff at the pumping station must be held answerable for the flood-like state of affairs in Kidderpore-Ekbalpore belt. A show-cause letter was also issued to an assistant engineer (posted at Mominpore pumping station) for negligence of duty. At Golf Green, Singh discovered that the gully pits had been chocked. He has requested Trinamool councillor Tapan Dasgupta to control the locals who throw rubbish in the gully pits regularly.
