Hydrogen buses over electric? Explore, says SC

NEW DELHI: As vehicular pollution continues to add to the capital's foul air in spite of several measures taken via the authorities, the Supreme Court on Monday asked the Delhi govt to explore the feasibility of introducing 'zero-emission' and cost-effective hydrogen-run public shipping buses as a substitute of procuring electrical buses for the city.

Twenty years after the SC directed conversion of all buses, taxis and three-wheelers to CNG to curb air pollution, a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta made up our minds to examine the feasibility of hydrogen-run buses and directed the state govt and Environment Pollution Prevention & Control Authority (EPCA) to find out workability of introducing such cars in the capital. It said hydrogen buses are operating successfully in other nations and their procurement may not be an issue because the Tata staff has started production such cars in the nation.

With the Delhi govt informing the court that it had initiated the method of purchasing 1,000 electrical buses, the court said it used to be better to leapfrog from CNG to hydrogen fuel . "These buses are running successfully in other countries and it is used in California. Tata is also manufacturing it. These vehicles have a range of 400 km. These are next generation vehicles and good for environment also. We can leapfrog from CNG to hydrogen-run buses. They are also cost effective and their running cost is also very low," the bench said. It said such buses are hybrid and they may be able to additionally run on electricity.
