K'taka: Toddler swallows cooker whistle, dies

MANDYA: In a center wrenching incident, a one-and-a-half years outdated baby died due to asphyxiation after he swallowed a pressure cooker whistle at Nagarakere village of the Madduru taluk in Mandya n Saturday night. The final rites of the deceased toddler used to be carried out on Sunday at 11am.


HC Mahadevu, president, Nagarakere gram panchayat, stated that the toddler has been recognized as Bhuvan. He used to be the son of Marilingegowda and Roopa, who are working in the survey division at Kundapur town in Udupi district.


"As both Marilingegowda and Roopa work in Kundapura, they left the baby with his grandparents Shivaramu who runs a fair price shop in the village and Puttalingamma, who is a home maker. On Saturday around 8pm, Bhuvan was hungry. While mixing the rice and sambar for him, Puttalingamma kept the rice cooker open. Bhuvan crawled near the cooker and swallowed the whistle. Puttalingamma who saw the kid swallowing the object, tried to remove it from his mouth. But it went further deep," stated Mahadevu.


"The toddler was immediately rushed to a doctor in Madduru who was able to remove the whistle from his food pipe. But the toddler developed breathing issues and the doctor advised the family to rush the kid to either Mandya or Mysuru for further treatment. On the way to Mandya, the toddler breathed his last," he defined.


"The parents of deceased toddler arrived in the village on Sunday early morning. The final rites were performed at 11am," he stated. Madduru police stated no grievance has been registered in the case.
