Maha: Dairies make it clear, say can't hike rate

MUMBAI: The state executive is taking convenience in the announcement via a piece of dairies, led via Sonai Dairy in Indapur-the greatest non-public dairy in the state, to hike the purchase fee from milk farmers via Rs 3 from July 21. But many dairies, both cooperative and private, say they aren't part of the decision.

"This applies mainly to dairies in Indapur and adjoining areas who procure milk at Rs 17-18 per litre. In the milk hubs of Sangli and Kolhapur, the rate is higher at Rs 20 to 23, so we cannot afford to raise the rate beyond that," stated Shripad Chitale of the personal sector Chitale dairy and president of the Milk Producers and Processor's Welfare Association.

"The state cannot depend on dairies to raise the procurement price because most dairies have not benefited from the export subsidies for milk powder," says Vinayak Patil from the cooperative sector's Rajarambapu Dudh Sangh.

In the majority of the state, farmers obtain Rs 17-19 for a litre of cow's milk. This is not up to the cost of a bottled water-Rs 20 in line with litre. Rates in the milk hub of Kolhapur have a tendency to be higher at round Rs 23. The dairy sector in the state procures about 120 lakh litres of milk daily. In June 2017, the state declared Rs 27 in line with litre as procurement value from farmers. But since November 2017, procurement value plummeted via up to Rs 10.

The reason: An extra supply of 22 lakh litres in line with day. Also, world costs for skimmed milk powder fell 30-40%. As a consequence, dairies may not promote milk powder shares and started making losses. So, they diminished procurement costs.
