NEW DELHI: Observing that two years’ time sought via the Delhi govt to de-congest traffic within the city is simply too long, the Supreme Court on Friday summoned the police commissioner to in my view appear before it to explain what urgent steps are had to take on the problem.
A task force constituted via the Delhi govt had recognized as many as 77 bottlenecks within the city and put them in three classes — 28 extremely congested ones, 30 congested ones and 19 mildly congested corridors. But the government, in its reaction to the court, didn't specify any time-line for removing the traffic bottlenecks and encroachments on city roads, compelling the court to summon the police commissioner.
A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said the folks of Delhi must no longer be forced to are living with the traffic congestion for another two years and one thing needed to be done urgently to deliver reduction to them as they are already going through critical problems because of deteriorating air high quality which is aggravated via traffic congestion.
It requested advocate Wasim A Qadri, representing the Delhi govt, as to why it would take two years to take away the traffic bottlenecks within the city. Quadri said two years’ time has been mentioned since buildings of flyovers, underpasses and foot over-bridges would take time.
“Short-term measures, like improvements in road geometrics and many others, will take six to eight months. However, long-term measures like foot over-bridges, underpasses, U-turns will take six months for approval and sanction of estimates. Thereafter, 12 months might be required to execute the approval,” town govt said.
The 77 congested corridors were recognized via the six teams constituted via LG Anil Baijal. Of the 28 extremely congested corridors, southern traffic vary has nine, outer vary seven, western and japanese levels four each and every, central three and northerly traffic one. Four roads — Mehrauli-Badarpur, Aurobindo Marg, Mathura Road and Chirag Dilli Road — would get top priority for de-congestion through a pilot mission, the government said.
The govt contended that it used to be taking taking steps to develop the roads to take care of traffic congestion. But the bench used to be no longer satisfied with the reaction as the government didn't take steps within the last one-and-half years after the document on congestion used to be ready via Delhi traffic police in February 2017.
