Sterlite: Efforts begin to evacuate acids, gases

MADURAI: After evacuation of 2,124 metric tonne of sulphuric acid from the sealed Sterlite plant in Tuticorin, districts government have begun efforts to evacuate other acids, gases, chemical substances and fabrics from the copper plant.
Tuticorin district collector Sandeep Nanduri instructed reporters on Monday that the evacuation would happen as really helpful by means of a high-power committee of the Tamil Nadu executive that had inspected the plant lately.

“The committee submitted its observations and suggestions to the state executive, following which now we have gained directions from the federal government to shape a district level committee underneath the management of the collector to determine evacuation of the rest acids, chemical substances and gases from the plant. We were suggested to complete it inside 30 days (by means of July 31),” he mentioned.

According to the collector, except for sulphuric acid, other main parts in the plant to be evacuated are phosphoric acid, copper listen, liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, diesel and gypsum. However, however the stock could now not be quantified.

He mentioned the amount of gypsum was monumental and that it will take more than a month to evacuate it. “Evacuation of all the parts could be carried out simultaneously,” he mentioned.


Nanduri mentioned the district level committee comprising a sub-collector, Tuticorin company commissioner and officers from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, hearth and rescue services and products department, business protection and police visited the plant on Saturday and studied the requirements to evacuate the mentioned parts.


“They visited the plant for the second one time on Monday to finalise the requirements corresponding to specialised tankers, number of cell diesel generator units (as continual provide to the plant has been disconnected) and pumps. They shall be mobilised from the market, and Sterlite will bear the bills. As it happened relating to sulphuric acid, we're identifying patrons for other parts too,” he added.


The collector mentioned evacuation of acids and chemical substances could be carried out underneath the supervision of the district level committee. Finished products in the plant could be left untouched, he added.
