KORAPUT: Students of government faculties and colleges in Jeypore on Thursday took oath to make town open defecation loose.
They pledged to make use of bogs and create consciousness among circle of relatives and neighbours concerning the ill-effects of defecating within the open. Students can be given whistles to blow in the event that they see other kids defecating within the open.
"We organised the oath-taking ceremony to create awareness among school students about the use of toilets," stated Sanjay Acharya, government officer, Jeypore municipality.
As part of the initiative, 'swachhata patras' were distributed among students of primary and prime faculties and colleges. It was read out through them on the college prayer. "Most households in our area do not have toilets. They attend to nature's call in the open. Hence, I urge them to use community toilets constructed in our area," stated Gayatri Bairagi, a Class VIII scholar of upper primary college, Parabeda.
Official assets stated at the moment the municipality has built nine group bogs at other places in Jeypore and every day a minimum of 5 cellular bogs are stationed on the subject of slum areas that do not have group bogs. "Door-to-door campaigns are being undertaken and posters and banners being put up. People are being urged to use mobile and community toilets rather than defecating in the open as the habit leads to several diseases besides making the environment dirty," stated Acharya. "We aim to make the town ODF by October 2. If required more community toilets will be constructed," he added.
People have welcomed the municipality's move to make town ODF as folks defecating within the open no longer best be afflicted by various sicknesses but also tarnish town's symbol.
